Knocked my 1 1/2 Terabyte external drive of the shelf the other day.Hit the grown hard enough to put a dent in it. When I attached the drive via USB the dreaded format drive box came up. So I fired up LinuxLive and made a bootable Ubuntu usb stick. Booted to Ubuntu and recovered all my data. I've been using LinuxLive since you guys come out.
